From Hospital Halls to Healing: A Story of Resilience and Movement
7 weeks ago today we went to the hospital for my husband to have an urgent surgery for a joint infection he was experiencing post shoulder replacement done in March. He was pretty sick and we were both worried. You know things aren’t good when you get the “this is how you open the safe” talk before you head out. (The hubby is a retired ortho surgeon and usually nothing medical rattles him.)
He did well with the surgery, but was in the hospital for 5 days and came home with a PICC line and needed IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. He finished the IV antibiotics yesterday and the PICC line is out!
Many of you know that Glenn works out every single day and has done so for decades. He’s 73 and I firmly believe that his dedication to consistent exercise and taking care of his body is what helped him overcome this illness as well as he did. Many folks in their 70’s (or younger) would have been bedridden by all that was going on with his body. During the past two months, he has only missed doing some sort of exercise for one day. The video shows him doing laps around the nurses’ station; he figured out how many laps it took to get in a mile and did 3 miles/day.
While it has been an incredibly long 2 months, I am incredibly proud of Glenn for being patient and working so hard to overcome everything that was thrown his way. It was a very long road and it feels so good to feel nothing but relief and gratitude today. Status quo is a great place to be.
The moral of the story - get up and move, it’s never too late to start and the benefits are worth every step you take.
