The Best Parts of Retirement? I Have a List.
People ask me sometimes what the best parts of retirement are.
I have a pretty long list.
Of course, there are the obvious things. Less rushing, more freedom, no Sunday night dread. But honestly, the things I love most are smaller and quieter than I expected.
Waking Up When I Want To
At the top of the list: waking up when I want to.
No alarm. No jumping out of bed because there is an early meeting or flight to catch. Just waking up when my body decides it is time. It still feels like a luxury.
Slow Mornings and Good Coffee
And then there are the mornings.
I love slow mornings.
Coffee in my favorite comfy chair. Sometimes I read a book, sometimes I check the news, sometimes I get myself organized for the day. Sometimes I sit there for an hour. Sometimes two. It depends on my mood and whether the coffee is especially good.
No rushing.
No trying to squeeze three things in before 9 a.m.
I can ease into the day, which turns out to be one of retirement’s underrated gifts.
I do not miss early morning appointments. I definitely do not miss early flights. If I never have to set an alarm for a 5 a.m. airport run again, I will be just fine.
The Freedom to Choose
What I really love is the freedom to decide what I want to do based on how I feel that day.
Want to go out? Great.
Want to stay home? Also great.
Need a productive day? Fine.
Want a slower one? Nobody is keeping score.
There is something deeply satisfying about not owing anyone anything. That probably sounds harsher than I mean it, but after years of schedules, responsibilities, and always being needed somewhere by someone, having my time belong mostly to me feels really good.
Living on My Own Schedule
I eat when I am hungry instead of when the clock says it is lunchtime.
And maybe the best part of all? Real time with people I care about.
Not rushed time squeezed between obligations. Real conversations. Long lunches. Time with friends and family where nobody is watching the clock or already halfway out the door.
The Best Surprise of Retirement
Retirement, at least for me, has not been about doing nothing.
It has been about having the freedom to decide what matters that day.
Sometimes that looks like travel or a project or plans with friends.
And sometimes it looks like sitting in a comfy chair with coffee for way longer than seems reasonable.
Turns out, both count.
This bean dip has been a favorite in my kitchen for decades. Inspired by a recipe from an old community fundraiser cookbook and tweaked over the years, it has become my own. Easy to make, perfect for gatherings, and always one of the first dishes to disappear, it's a true crowd-pleaser.
